Exel Composites' US factory earns ISO 14001 certification
Our Erlanger factory in Kentucky, USA has achieved the ISO 14001 certification. The globally recognized standard confirms that thenfacility operates within the structured environmental management framework and reinforces Exel’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and long-term sustainability goals.
Issued by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 14001 sets out requirements for an effective environmental management system. The standard provides organizations with a systematic approach to managing environmental responsibilities, with a focus on improving environmental performance, meeting regulatory and compliance obligations, and achieving defined environmental objectives. The standard is also awarded for commitment to long-term continual improvement, not just environmental compliance.
For the Erlanger factory, ISO 14001 formalizes and strengthens existing local initiatives, including waste management and energy efficiency improvements. These efforts directly align with Exel’s wider sustainability goals, which include promoting recyclability and circular economy principles, and contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by ensuring responsible use of chemicals and supply chain management. Achieving the certification demonstrates that environmental responsibility is embedded both at a corporate level and in day-to-day operations.
A crucial element of achieving ISO 14001 is the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ (PDCA) approach, which underpins Exel’s approach to environmental management.
“The PDCA framework is implemented through all areas at Erlanger, from the factory floor all the way up to management. In fact, a lot of ideas for process and scrap waste reduction come from those guys closest to the production line,” said Tim Mohr, site manager, US at Exel Composites. “It’s a collaborative effort from all levels, with everyone encouraged to input ideas no matter what their job title”.
Achieving ISO 14001 also serves as an assurance to customers, suppliers, and stakeholders that Exel values its environmental responsibilities highly. Alongside delivering consistent quality across production, the certification demonstrates that Exel operates with transparency and accountability, showcasing a broader commitment to sustainability.
While the certification represents a significant achievement, ISO 14001 is a strong foundation for ongoing progress towards sustainability goals. Continual improvement through regular audits and evaluation of operations will remain key at the Erlanger factory, ensuring environmental impact sites alongside production of high-performing composites solutions.
