From Belgium to Finland: Quality Engineer Ruben Claus’s global career journey

At just 24 years old, quality engineer Ruben Claus has already built a career that spans four countries and three continents. From his start in Exel Belgium to assignments in the United States and China, and now to his current role in Finland, Ruben’s journey is a testament to adaptability, curiosity, and a drive to grow.

“I graduated with a degree in biochemistry, not engineering,” Ruben explains. “But I was eager to work, and after a few interviews, I got the chance to join the Oudenaarde factory.”

Ruben was hired as a quality engineer in Belgium, but when the site faced closure, he quickly took on additional responsibilities. “I ended up managing quality, health, safety, and environment. It was a lot, but I liked the challenge.”

When an opportunity arose in Erlanger, US, Ruben was asked to fly out on short notice. “Callum Gough from Exel told me on a Thursday evening, and by Monday I was on a plane,” he recalls. “I helped train the team, and I really enjoyed working there. The people are so committed, they really want the factory to succeed.”

His time in Erlanger left a lasting impression. “If they asked me to go back, I wouldn’t hesitate,” Ruben says. “It’s a great site with a great team.”

From the US, Ruben briefly traveled to Nanjing, China, to support quality assurance for transfer cases. “It was a short trip, but it gave me insight into different quality standards and how we adapt across regions.”

Now based in Joensuu, Finland, Ruben is part of the Flying Whales project, which brings a new level of complexity. “It’s fascinating how strict the requirements are,” he says. “Even though some parts are hidden inside the structure, visual and technical standards still matter. If I don’t do my job right, it could impact the whole structure. That keeps me sharp.”

In Joensuu, Ruben has found more good colleagues. “The team there is incredibly smart, and I’m learning a lot from them. I’ve had the chance to work with so many different people who have helped me understand quality from many angles.”

Despite the challenges of relocating and adapting to new environments, Ruben thrives on change. “I’m someone who needs a challenge. If I stay in one position too long, I get bored. I like the unknown.” He’s also grateful for the opportunities he’s had. “It’s insane, honestly. I’m only 24, and with just a bachelor’s degree, I’ve been able to work in four countries. That’s not something many people from Belgium can say.”

Ruben’s dedication is clear in his work ethic. “I always try to give 100%. If I see someone cares and wants to improve, I’ll give them everything I’ve got. But if they don’t care, it’s hard for me to bring the same energy.”

Outside of work, Ruben enjoys reading, walking, and spending time with his golden retriever Ziva, although she now lives with his grandparents in Belgium. “I miss her a lot, but I know she’s happy and well cared for. That makes it easier.”

As for what’s next? Ruben is open to the future. “I’ve signed a permanent contract for Exel in Joensuu, and I’m happy here. As long as I’m learning and being challenged, I’m where I need to be.”
